The ATEP is a three year program that requires application and acceptance into the program. As freshmen, interested students should take Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries and Anatomy and Physiology I as part of their studies. Applications are accepted in the Spring semester with interviews after the application deadline. Clinical classes are limited to 8 students per instructor, so a limited number of students are accepted each year. If accepted, the students begin in the program the following fall semester. Transfer students are given the same consideration for admission into the program as students currently enrolled at King.
During the ATEP, the courses build on one another to emphasize lifetime learning over the course of their education. Students attend both academic and clinical experience classes. Clinical courses require both classroom instruction and 150 clinical experience hours each semester at various clinical sites. Sites include the King College athletic training room, local high schools, sports medicine clinics, physical therapy clinics, and various other medical offices. Students are required to maintain a 2.75 GPA in all coursework and must make a C or better in all major courses.
A copy of the ATEP Student Handbook containing all policies and procedures is present on the ATEP website (atep.king.edu). Feel free to look through all aspects of the ATEP web pages. If you are unable to find the information that you are looking for, or you would like to speak to someone concerning the program, please contact Sherri L. Our faculty and staff are delighted in your interest, and we will do our best to assist you to achieve your professional goals. We strive to provide our students with a comprehensive learning experience so they will gain the knowledge necessary to become a part of the allied healthcare profession of athletic training.
Athletic trainers are being employed to provide health care services to the physically active in more varied settings than ever before. Athletic training is reaching to patients of all ages now and also to those with special needs. The faculty and staff are committed to providing students with the best experience possible. The class sizes are small and provide close supervision and interaction with experienced professionals. The atmosphere at King and in the ATEP program is a caring, Christian atmosphere. We care about each student, their learning, and their future and we look forward to working with each one. All students are held accountable for achieving the competency outcomes in their course of study; and we are here to help them succeed by providing personal attention to our students.
The program at King College has been awarded initial accreditation with The Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). The students who graduate from accredited programs will be eligible to take the Board of Certification (BOC) examination. After passing the exam, the students will be qualified to seek employment as certified athletic trainers in a variety of settings such as secondary schools, colleges and universities, professional athletic teams, sports medicine clinics, industrial clinics, orthopedic offices, wellness facilities, and education. Students may also pursue graduate school opportunities with additional coursework to complete prerequisites for programs such as exercise science, physical therapy, occupational therapy, physician's assistant, education, or other related fields.
